First of all, what is ECU tuning? ECU tuning, also called chip tuning, ECU flashing or flash tuning, is a way of changing the parameters of the car’s Engine Control Unit (ECU) to “unlock” more power for your car.

Basically, when more air and fuel enters the combustion chamber, more power can be produced.

Car manufacturers usually have a pre-set parameter of this air-fuel ratio (AFR) in order to meet emission regulations, maximise engine longevity or improve fuel consumption. Performance is rarely the main consideration for road cars.

ECU Tuners do their work by connecting certain devices to the ECU, to modify certain parameters, allowing them to change things like the air-fuel ratio to improve the car’s performance.

So is ECU tuning legal in Singapore?

So far, there doesn’t seem to be any rules that outlaws ECU tuning in Singapore. Hence ECU tuning is legal in Singapore.

But of course, with everything, there has to be a balance. As long as your car is not modified to the extent it fails to meet emission standards or VICOM inspections and so on, ECU tuning is perfectly legal in Singapore.

ECU tuning to improve fuel efficiency

ECU tuning isn’t just for unlocking more power and making your car go faster. ECU tuning is also about maximising the efficiency of your car. Improved efficiency means more savings on petrol.

This is why it is important to find a good tuner in Singapore who can tune your car specific to your car’s make, model, and your needs.
