We have had a few customers coming in to our workshop for scheduled servicing and then complaining about having a smelly aircon. These customers also reported the aircon not blowing out enough air. It doesn’t matter so many fresh mint scented Christmas trees they hang on their rear view mirror, there is always this lingering smell of rotting socks in their car. Then they ask us this question that bothers a lot of people “how to fix smelly car air con?”
WHY IS MY AIR CON SO SMELLY
If you are complaining about having a bad smell coming from the inside of your car, it could be time for a new cabin filter.
But first, lets enjoy a video of a dusty cabin filter we found in one of our customer’s car.
If your first words were “ugh”, please continue reading.
FIX FOR SMELLY CAR AIR CON
Replacing your cabin filter not only helps if you have bad smell in the car, it also helps if you have allergies. The filter blocks allergy-producing dust from entering your car.
If it is too choked full of dust like the video above, it can cause the air con’s blower motor to malfunction. It will have to work harder to push the air through the car’s vents. Sometimes, you can see visible debris entering the car cabin, or ineffective cooling or even fog forming on your windscreen.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I REPLACE MY CABIN FILTER
Cabin filters should be replaced every year or when there is a noticeable reduction in airflow when using the air con or if there is a bad smell. A dirty cabin filter can become a source of bad odours because the moisture is trapped together with outside contaminants that promote bacterial growth. This is a common issue especially in humid Singapore and it does not hurt to change the cabin filter more often than less. You can usually ask you workshop to check your cabin filter during a schedule servicing with them.
