Mazda MX-5

  • cooling coil leak
  • condenser leak

If your Mazda MX-5’s air-conditioning is no longer blowing cold air, or if it takes a long time to cool the cabin, there’s a chance your AC system has a refrigerant leak. Left unrepaired, leaks not only reduce cooling efficiency but can also damage expensive components such as the compressor.

Recently, we worked on a Mazda MX-5 that came in for an aircon repair. During the AC flushing process, we noticed bubbling on the condenser surface which is a clear sign of a gas leak. We then used a borescope camera to inspect the evaporator (cooling coil) hidden inside the dashboard, and found visible traces of refrigerant oil, confirming an internal leak.

The problems we found:

  • Condenser leak: Bubbling during flushing indicated refrigerant escaping.
  • Cooling coil leak: Detected using borescope, with signs of oil and moisture.

Both components are essential for cooling performance. The condenser releases heat from the refrigerant, while the cooling coil absorbs heat from the cabin air. When either fails, cooling capacity drops drastically.

The repair process included:

  1. Full AC system flush to remove contaminants.
  2. Removal of the faulty condenser and cooling coil.
  3. Installation of new Original or OEM replacement parts.
  4. Full AC system flush again
  5. Vacuuming and recharging the system with the correct refrigerant amount.
  6. Leak testing to confirm the system is fully sealed.

After the repair, the Mazda MX-5’s aircon was restored to icy-cold performance, ensuring comfort even in hot weather.

Why early leak detection matters:
Refrigerant leaks often start small but will worsen over time. Running the AC with low refrigerant can cause the compressor to overheat and seize, leading to far more expensive repairs. If you notice reduced cooling, unusual noises, or a musty smell, it’s best to get your AC system checked as soon as possible.
